On the way home from a Santa Barbara sea glass hunt and on a whim, I stopped at El Matador State Beach in Malibu.
Even if you’re not looking for sea glass, El Matador is a beautiful beach to visit. As long as you don’t mind walking down a few trails and some steep stairs, you won’t regret visiting this breathtaking beach.
One Caveat for El Matador State Beach
Be aware, however, that there are no facilities for beach visitors. Bring your own food and drinks, and be prepared to walk back up to the top of the cliff to use the bathroom (one outhouse) that’s located at the edge of the parking lot.
Sea Glass on El Matador State Beach
I was only on El Matador beach for a few minutes, and the tide was coming in. I walked to the left towards a row of homes that were on the beach. In front of a few million dollar homes, I found three pieces of sea glass. Two were green and one was a large white piece. They were all nicely frosted. I definitely plan on returning to El Matador beach in the future during low tide to do some serious sea glass collecting.
Sea Glass in Malibu
Yes, you can look for sea glass on Malibu beaches. It’s legal to stroll on the beach up to the high-tide. Want to find public access to more beaches in Malibu? No worries. There’s an app for that: Our Malibu Beaches.
El Matador Beach is located at 2215 Pacific Coast Highway, Malibu, California. There is paid parking on the top of the cliff. I went there on a summer holiday weekend, and there was enough parking even though the parking lot is small.
There were only a few people on the beach. If you’re looking for some seclusion on a beautiful beach and if you want to find a few pieces of sea glass, you should check out this beach. El Matador Beach has to be one of Malibu’s best kept secrets.
In English El Matador means the killer. I think the connection may be it’s a “killer” nice beach, or it could mean it’s a killer walking back up the cliff from the beach.
Here a few pictures of El Matador Beach in Malibu. It’s one of the most beautiful beaches I’ve ever seen in Los Angeles.
